I was invited to be the first international artist in residence at Volcano Arts Centre, Volcano, on Big Island Hawaii. TheĀ Volcano Arts Centre is very active in areas of conservation and ecology, so the relationship that my work has with the natural environment was of particular interest to the hosts. During the first three weeks of this six week residency, I ran environmental arts workshops with local children, a family sculpture day, and seminars focussing on art in the natural environment.
During the second three weeks of the residency I conceived and constructed an installation ‘Nothing Here Ever Lasts’. It was built in response to the heightened sense of the ephemeral, brought about by the fluidity and accelerated change of landscape in close proximity to a volcano. Its form is inspired by ancient and modern characteristics of local architecture.
